SEO should not be a one-and-done task list item for any business. In reality, SEO is a long-term investment that requires nurturing to see growth. Just like you want to be sure that you are nurturing your customers to increase their lifetime value, you want to do the same with your SEO practices.

Many argue that SEO is one of the best investments you can make for your business.

When maintained properly, SEO will affirm your competitiveness in the marketplace. It is important to stay up-to-date on your SEO practices because what might work for you today, likely won’t within the next year. Consumer trends change, and as a consequence so do your ideal keywords. Your SEO practices have a much greater return on investment when you keep up with small initiatives throughout the year. I had a chance to dive into the daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly SEO checklist items that should be completed in my article “SEO Maintenace: A Checklist For Essential Year-Round Tasks”, for Search Engine Journal. In the article, you’ll learn the framework for a well-structured SEO plan to best help you achieve your overall marketing and business goals.

DAILY SEO TASKS:

Daily tasks can be as little as simply staying updated on current trends on best practices to being able to properly analyze your current metrics. Noting the priority of daily tasks will keep you from wasting time and move you toward true SEO progress.

From the article:

SEO requires both big picture thinking and the ability to tackle daily tasks and action items…. You need to be able to diagnose issues and reverse any negative trends before they impact your overall marketing and business goal

MONTHLY SEO TASKS:

Each month you must create a report on your SEO performance. This will keep you from consecutively running initiatives that aren’t working for you. In addition, you should consider completed and continuing items to plan ahead for the next month.

Looking at the past helps shape the future. When you combine the action items and tactics with the performance data, you should get an overall picture of the reality of what is driving SEO performance.

QUARTERLY SEO TASKS:

Each quarter you want to be sure to conduct a full SEO audit on issues such as technical issues, on-page issues, links, and local listings. This will help ensure that you are aware of tools that might not be performing the way you intend them to.

An audit using third-party tools to ensure accuracy and consistency of data is strongly advised at least quarterly.

YEARLY SEO TASKS:

At least once a year you want to revisit the basics of your SEO planning and strategy and the measurement plans you have in place. Compiling the previous year’s worth of data will help you identify any strengths and weaknesses you have within your SEO strategy.

Without a plan and using past learnings and a realistic view of the resources being invested in the coming year, there can be a gap between expectations and reality. It is best to sort this out before getting months down the road.
